Frusic - Week of June 17th, 2016

Well, here we are with another week of great music! A lot of albums came out this week, but I'm just going to showcase a select few. So let's get to it, shall we?

Wye Oak - Tween (Merge Records)

Admittedly, Tween came out as a digital release just a week ago. But because it was a bit of a surprise release, I'm going to include it this week. An album of reworked "outtakes" from previous sessions, Tween is a concise concoction of indie-pop and folk tapestries. A nice, easy going listen that demands repeated listens to find each new musical moment. This one will put a smile on your face!

Gojira - Magma (Roadrunner Records)

The new album from the Duplantier brothers et al. is a bit of a rebirth for the band. Written during a period of personal struggle, Magma is self-produced and quite introspective. At times crushing, this Gojira album almost feels as if it's attempting a therapeutic release with each song. Although not as punishing as previous albums, Magma is a whole new beast for the band, and definitely worth checking out.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Getaway (Warner Bros. Records)

With production coming from none other than Danger Mouse, Red Hot Chili Peppers have returned with their newest effort, The Getaway. Their second effort with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Flea and co. have ushered in a more piano-driven sound with a jolt of trademark funk here and there. It's an ambitious undertaking to be sure, especially for a veteran band in 2016. Should be interesting!

Swans - The Glowing Man (Young God Records)

There isn't much to say about Swans, to be honest. Their albums are always a trip that you must take and get to your destination, because words just won't do their work any justice. And The Glowing Man is no exception. It's an experience... so experience it!

Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool (XL Recordings)

Radiohead's new album came out a little while ago digitally, but A Moon Shaped Pool was finally released in stores on the 17th, so I'm writing about it now! This album kind of floats by as if you're on a cloud. It's a fascinating listen, and what more could you expect from a band like Radiohead? People have been waiting anxiously for this one, and it does not disappoint!
